Howard explained the rise in the trend toward franchising stems from higher unemployment rates, as well as, increased interest from existing businesses-owners looking to expand operations and strengthen brands. “The economic doldrums we’ve been experiencing have contributed toward this growth mode because of fewer quality jobs, the threat of layoffs and public distrust of corporate culture,” Howard said. “Having control of your own business while at the same time having a ‘safety net’ of support are other key reasons why franchising has become so attractive to entrepreneurs.” A recent article in the Denver Business Journal supports this notion, stating that the level of interest in franchising has reached a high point not seen since the mid 1950’s.
